My Catalyst-Driven Theme For Universal Pictures' The Five-Year Engagement

I've worked with Catalyst for a while now building various sites for myself and independent creative clients, but this is the first time I thought I'd show off in this forum.

Tom and Violet's Wedding is a transmedia extension of "The Five-Year Engagement," a film from Universal Pictures starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. The movie hits theaters on April 27, 2012, but this faux blog -- with posts and comments written in the voice of the characters -- will have new content several times a week from now until then.

Particularly interesting is that Universal Pictures is using this site as the primary online vehicle for the film. That's a change in strategy, since most movies utilize Flash websites that are more "marquee" style. I, for one, applaud the use of a more story-based, interactive site... and not just because I got to build it!

The site itself is fairly simplistic, as it's meant to emulate the kind of blog a couple of semi-tech savvy thirty-somethings would use to announce their engagement and document their journey to the altar. I worked off of design comps provided by Jetset Studios, the agency that hired me, and used mostly off-the-shelf plugins (with some style and output modifications.)

Anyway, I'm especially proud of this one, and very pleased to see the marketing department for a major motion picture release opt for a content-driven, story-based site to build their brand!

Is this the first time a Catalyst-driven site has been used to promote a Hollywood film? If so, it's a nice feather in Catalyst's... and my... hat!

It may very well be. Great job and very cool premise to the whole blog!

Thanks, Eric -- and thanks for the database help earlier this month on this very site! Hats off!

Nice indeed. Just curious, will you have any further involvement with the site, in terms of maintenance or adding content or have you handed it off to the client?

Thanks! I'll be maintaining the site through the release date of the film -- mostly making sure the scheduled posts go up on time and keeping things upgraded and up to date.

That's very kind of you to say, costafong! However, this isn't my first rodeo (although it is my first time developing a WordPress site for a film). I was the producer (project manager, if this was the tech world) for the websites for Bridesmaids, 50/50, and a few others. It's not as glamorous as one might think... or, if you don't think it would be glamorous at all, well, then, it's exactly as glamorous as you might think. ;-)
