Anyone else not able to search media library?

Does anyone else have the problem of not being able to search the media library? No matter what I key in the search field, no files will come up. The search is simply not working.

What's really a pain I just discovered is that I cannot set a featured image now, if I want to use an image already in the media library--I cannot get a list of any image files. Guess I'm going to have to upload a second copy of the image.

I would start with the usual.

    • Deactivate all plugins. If that resolves the issue, then reactivate them one at a time until you find the cause.

    • Switch to default WP Theme and see if that makes a difference.

I found what could be the problem. I use Custom Post Types UI plugin for custom posts and taxonomies. The plugin itself is not a problem. But I found a thread on Wordpress from someone who had a somewhat similar problem.

He had named one of his taxonomies "Type" and I had done the same thing. When he deleted that taxonomy, his media library started working again properly. Apparently there is some conflict with naming a taxonomy "type" which seems like not an uncommon word to use for a taxonomy.

As for me, I deleted the "type" taxonomy and rebuilt it under another name, listing_type. But it still did not resolve my issue. Maybe I should not have used the letters "type" at all on the name. Maybe there is something with the word Type stuck in my database causing issues still.....

As for deactivating all the plugins and the theme, I'm always so afraid to do that. But I did deactivate the recently added plugins one by one and nothing changed. I did not do the theme. I did deactivate the Custom Post Type UI plugin of course. (Is it always the case that no data, no settings are lost when plugins are deactivated? If I switch from Catalyst/Dynamic to another theme and then go back will I always be back exactly as it was?)

Deactivating plugins and switching themes should not be any problem. It is in fact normal procedure for testing in WP. Deleting a plugin is another matter, but just deactivating normally would not cause any issues. I can’t guarantee no plugin will ever have some quirk but as I say this is the normal way to test things.

Also when you test plugins you should deactivate ALL plugins at the same time. If that resolves the issue then you can turn them back on one at a time until you find the cause. If turning them all off makes no difference then the cause is more than likely something else (although occasionally a bad plugin can cause issues even if not active).

Same for switching Themes. All your settings should remain as before. The only possible thing I can think of is if your widgets don’t display you should find them in the Inactive section at Appearance > Widgets. You would just need to drag them back where you want them, no need to recreate them. This may or may not happen but shouldn’t be a big deal either way.

It’s possible there may be some artifacts in the DB from the CPT name change. You may need to address that with the plugin developer.

Yeah, I've had this happen to me a couple times, and it's a pain if you don't remember to write down what goes where.

Well, my fears were well-founded. I deactivated all 18 of my plugins. The problem was still there. So I reactivated all the plugins and while I could get into my admin, my front end would not come up. Chrome and Safari told me that the site would not connect; Firefox gave me more information: "Content Encoding Error: The page you are trying to use cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression."

Luckily, I had went to my cpanel and did a backup of the database before deactivating the plugins. I restored that backup and it is working okay again. Now I'm REALLY afraid to change themes.

Check your gzip settings at Core Options > Content > Content Encoding Options and anywhere else such as any plugins (especially any cache plugins).

Gzip is checked on. I don't know what the setting was after the plugin deactivation and before the database restore.

Actually turning it ON can sometimes cause issues, especially depending on the combination of other things in your server environment, plugins, etc. So turning it OFF might be safer, again depending.

What theme was active when you had the connection problem?
